Ponce, The Pearl of the South [July 1]

July 1st
Saturday! The glorious weekend! Our first full week had come to an end but the fun was just beginning. Today we headed to Ponce, a large city on the southern coast of the island. Named after Juan Ponce de León’s great-grandson, Ponce is a city of much praise (especially by its denizens) due to its classic architectural preservations, history, sights and class. We were eager to go even though it meant waking up extra early and tolerating a 2-hour drive to get there. Due to Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central (a mountain range that divides the island into northern and southern coastal plains) we couldn’t just go in a straight line, we would have to travel around. Once there, our first stop was a famous castle once owned by sugar cane plantation owners: Castillo Serrallés. A beautifully designed “home” that was sold to the Puerto Rican government by the owner’s descendants in exchange for turning it into a museum. It serves as an elegant peek into the day-to-day life of the business elites during the island’s formative years. After the history lesson we went to Ponce’s central plaza where we attended a small museum on Ponce’s earliest firefighters who aided during great fires in the 1800’s. Afterwards, we got some amazing sorbets at King’s Cream a famous “ice cream” shop and chilled in the main plaza of the city. With time to spare we decided to use our free time visiting a local mall: Plaza el Caribe. Some of us bought some stuff, but we were all a bit more eager for tomorrow’s shopping destination. With another 2-hour drive back home we were all figuratively dead, but not enough so that we couldn’t enjoy our final treat of the day: pizza for dinner! Our eyelids heavy and our bellies full, we had barely gotten into our beds before we fell asleep. Zzzzzzzz…
